The Captain

The Captain of Stamford Golf Club for any particular year is the member thought most worthy of holding the office, at that time, by all the surviving Past Captains, whose choice was verified by the membership as a whole at the previous years AGM. The position is in fact a three year commitment, at the AGM he is voted as Vice Captain and serves for one year assisting the current Captain. During his year of office he chairs the council, represents Stamford at other golf clubs, functions and to the world at large. In the third year as Past Captain he advises and assists the new Captain in the furtherance of the clubs business and the role of Captain.

At Stamford the Captain decides which charity receives the proceeds from the "Captains Charity" for that year, presides at all home functions and presentations and has the last word on any dispute, behaviour and day to day organisation at the club.

Although he is in a favourable position due to the respect awarded to the Captains position, his ideas and changes he wishes to make only come to fruition after discussion and vote by the council as a whole.

The Vice Captain Mr. Harry FernleyThe Captain for 2008 is Mr. Harry Fearnley.

Vice Captain

The position of Vice Captain for the year is approved by a vote of the membership at the AGM, from a nomination submitted by all the surviving Past Captains. During his year of office the Vice Captain fulfils the duties of the Captain when he is not able.

The Vice Captain has a seat on the Council and a close relationship with the Captain during the Captains year of office, to ensure that he is familiar with the modus operandi of the duties required of him to ensure a smooth change over when he assumes the position of Captain the following year. Also it gives him a good briefing on the way the council works and the projects, developments and the objectives the club is currently pursuing.

The House and Bar Chairman

The Current House & Bar Chairman Mr. Graham Barber

The current House and Bar chairman is Graham Barber who will be the most recognised of all officials by the members, having fulfilled the position of Steward on no less than five occaisions and has stepped in as Temporary Steward more times that he cares to remember. In fact his family has further connections with the club, his son Gary a current member has been Steward recently and daughter Janet worked behind the bar for sometime a few years ago.

Graham became a member in 1970 and although he wished to be considered for service on the council for many years, was prevented from doing so due to his responsibilities as Steward. Over the last seven years Dave has made many improvements to the Junior Section. In his first year he steered the team to win the Tameside Juniors League and has since given the young members many competitions to generate their competitiveness and confidence.

The Juniors now have a competition every Saturday after the members comp and three Majors to test their talents and ensure accurate handicaps. They are the Captains, Presidents and the Centenary Trophies. Three Major boards sponsored by "Friends of Ray Sale", have now been added to record individual success, to the collection of modern club winners boards displayed in the function Room.

Dave somehow manages to combined shift work as a Tameside Fireman with his duties as Junior Organizer. He is working closely with Mark Smith the Club Pro to develop a juniors centre of excellence and would like to see more facilities for the Juniors such as separate facilities for changing and socialising, which he believes will produce a stronger junior section, providing a sound footing for young members to grow into skilled members mindful of the etiquette and standards required of full membership.
