The Professional Mark Smith

Our New Pro

After many years without a professional Stamford Golf Club engaged the services of Mark Smith former assistant Pro at Ashton Golf Club. After only a few months Mark has transformed the shop, started to improve the general quality of golf at Stamford with his lessons and has taken control of the day to day play on the course and competitions.

Mark was born on the 19th February 1982 and started seriously playing golf at Welshpool Golf Club in Wales at the tender age of 10, having been introduced to golf by his uncle Kevin Salter who happened to be the junior organizer at Welshpool at the time. He quickly mastered the finer points of the game and at fourteen years old joined his first club at Fairfield Golf Club, where he became Club Champion at 18 years of age off a handicap of 2.

The following year he turned professional and joined Colin Boyle at Ashton Golf Club as assistant pro, where he served for over seven years before taking his first full Pro position at Stamford. Colin Boyle was a massive influence on Mark not only in the development of his golf but with teaching lessons, time off for competitions and demonstrating how to run a quality golf shop. Mark will never be able to repay the deep feeling of gratitude he owes to Colin, but he appreciates the influence that a major mentor can have on a young mans career and future happiness. He has resolved to pass on the quality of support he received from Colin to the juniors at Stamford, working closely with David Allen(Junior Organiser) he would like to see a centre of excellence developed at Stamford and is giving his time freely to ensure its success.

With Colin Boyles encouragement he became the Assistant Pro matchplay Champion in 2005, the Manchester Alliance Order of Merit Champion in 2006 and won the PGA players tour at Grange Park with a 69. With several top ten finishes he is quickly blossoming into a formidable professional tour golfer. His most recent victory was in the White Trophy a mixed ProAm at Chorlton Golf Club with past Stamford Lady Captain Joanne Akers.

Now Stamford has a quality Pro once more we are at last invited back into the Dunham Forrest competition, where it is the clubs ambition to revisit our finest hour when we won the competition in 1980.
