Represent your club by joining a team

Our Historic Clubhouse

The tradition of team golf at Stamford dates back to the early part of the twentieth century, when the very first match was played against Clayton Golf Club, producing a win for Stamford by 29 holes to 5.

Friendly matches against other clubs, such as Clayton, Hyde and Fairfield played a significant part of Club life in the early years and had a greater importance attached to them than at any time since.
Team matches were formalised in 1961 with the commencement of the Cook Cup and its associated annual dinner. Stamford played home and away against Dukinfield, Glossop, Mellor & Townscliffe and Werneth Low. By 1966 interest had declined with the Cook Cup being last played for in 1973.
Oldham & District Golf League has been supported by Stamford for many years fielding teams in both the 'A' and 'B' divisions, with frequent successes in the League and Knockout cup.
Stamford were founding members of the local Rabbits league and have been its most successfull and committed team since.
The Senior section though not a team in the strict sense of the word play other local clubs home and away on a frequent and organised basis.
The junior section also play against other local teams in an organised manner.

You too can play your part in the making of history by joining one of the many teams who proudly represent Stamford.

Once you are established as a member of Stamford Golf Club, you become entitled to play competitive golf as a member of one of our many teams and sections, provided of course, that you qualify either by skill, age or gender.

Whether starting as a member or a junior there is a full route of progression as your ability improves in playing competitive team golf at Stamford. Juniors normally progress straight to the 'A' or 'B' team on becoming of age, whilst a slower progression is experienced by full members. Shortly after achieving an handicap they may join the Rabbits to obtain a first experience of playing competitive matchplay golf before moving up to the two main teams in their golden years and finally playing out their golf days with the seniors.

The high point of team golf at Stamford was winning the Manchester Alliance Dunham Forest Trophy in 1980. The competition involved matchplay golf between teams, which must include the Club Pro, on a knockout basis; with the last four clubs being entertained by the founder club on finals day. In 1980 there was a record entry of ninety six clubs from all over Lancashire, Cheshire and Derbyshire. Stamford beat Leigh, Bury, Mellor & Townscliffe and Blackley to appear in the final where they beat Oldham Werneth in the morning and Bolton Lostock in the afternoon. In the evening there was a memorable and buoyant atmosphere of celebration at Oakfield house.

The whole membership is looking forward to those great times once more now that Mark Smith has joined us as professional. As you read this our application for entry to next years competition is speeding on its way, acting as a great incentive for our younger and more skilled members to raise the profile of our great Club throughout the golfing world, once more.

Rabbits

The Case for Rabbits Golf

An article by Frank Hilton Honorary President and founder of the Oldham & District Rabbits Golf League.

For the record a Rabbit Golfer is any golfer who plays off an handicap of sixteen and above. No one is quite sure where the term Rabbit came from with respect to golf, it could be that the name was coined by better golfers, relating them to their animal namesakes who can cause extensive damage to a golf course. Or maybe it was for their infuriating habit of jumping in and out of the trees, or playing out of turn, or not obeying the rules correctly any reason will be used to use the word Rabbit to abuse a lesser player. Not without reason in some cases.

However, to play this difficult game you have to start somewhere. Most people cannot afford the equipment and fees until they have achieved professional fulfilment, or are from a family that has done so, or the kids leave home. Some are fortunate to be financed from a young age, so when they first become a full member at eighteen already have a handicap usually in low single figures. The rest of us struggle for twelve months to break a hundred, whereupon we put in three cards, say 99, 95 and 93 for our first handicap and are rewarded with a handicap of 18. It then takes a further five years to play to it.

During this time however, we have started to appreciate the traditions of golf, have learned many of the rules, learned(well almost) the etiquette required, have developed many new friendships and love the after golf assessment of the game, the inevitable arguments over the rules and the banter in the nineteenth hole. But most of all we love our host club, are proud of its traditions and have developed friendly rivalry with members of other neighbouring golf clubs and hold a handicap between 18 and 28. All I need now is to hone my game a little more and I am ready to represent my club.

But I can't!!! the 'A' team is restricted to 12 and under, the 'B' team to under 18, I am still working fulltime and have no time to practice, yet I cannot represent my club until I can play consistently, off better than 18, and then only if I get picked. I pay the same fees as everyone else, I support the social life of the club, I am the first in the queue to pay the levy for better equipment to improve the course for members who play more than I and I still cannot represent the club in matchplay golf. Not only all this I find that at least 50%(71% at Stamford) of my club membership are in the same position as I. If this narrative strikes a cord, competitive Rabbits golf is made for you.

Seniors

As early as 1977 the formation of a veterans section had been proposed but it did not materialise until a group of older and retired members started to play on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Popularly known as "Dad's Army" they formed the basis of the Stamford Casuals, which achieved official status in 1987.

Juniors

Objectives of the junior section

To create an environment where junior golf can thrive by providing opportunities for youngsters of any age, gender or background to participate and develop their talent to whatever level they aspire.

All new members who are under the age of 18 are automatically the responsibility of the junior organiser, who supervises the development of the youngsters up to the age of 18 at which time they move up to full or lady membership.

The Junior organiser is Mr David Allen a local fireman, who devotes much of his free time to nurturing the juniors through their informative years, so they may move on to become full members respectful of Stamford traditions and a credit to this great club.

He is also responsible for their golf development, knowledge of the rules and conduct on the course, he organises friendly matches throughout the season with other local clubs.
A junior team represents Stamford in the Tameside and Junior Golf League playing home and away in alternate years against 10 other local clubs.
The Club provides various trophies for the junior members major competitions, which take place throughout the year. Also junior members are invited 3 times per year to compete in the Club monthly medals to ensure an accurate handicap rating.
